Wakefield Trinity trialist Hugo Salabio has received a seven-match suspension following an independent tribunal on Tuesday evening.

The 22-year-old was sent off on his debut for the club for a spear tackle on opposition half-back Richie Myler during Sunday’s Super League fixture at Belle Vue.

Salabio, a prop forward, joined Mark Applegarth’s side on a 28-day trial just last month and was making his first appearance before being sent off four minutes into the second half.

He received a Grade F charge by the Rugby Football League’s match review panel on Monday.

Huddersfield youngster Will Pryce was hit with a 10-match suspension for a similar challenge on Hull’s Connor Wynne last season.

A statement on Tuesday from the RFL read: “Wakefield Trinity’s Hugo Salabio has today been banned for seven matches by an independent tribunal.

“Salabio admitted a charge of Grade F spear tackle committed during Sunday’s Super League match against Leeds Rhinos. He is also fined £1,000.”

It could mark the end of his Super League hopes for now, with no contract confirmed for the ex-Catalans forward.

The former Toulouse representative most recently featured in the French Elite 1 competition with Pia Donkeys, before being handed a trial with Wakefield alongside ex-Catalans winger Romain Franco.
