Luke Robinson closes in on Super League return with next role confirmed

Castleford Tigers are closing on a move to bring former Huddersfield Giants coach Luke Robinson into their coaching staff.

The Tigers were already looking to improve the depth in their coaching roster even before the drama surrounding Ryan Carr, who has currently been suspended by the club and looks set to leave.

Hull FC assistant coach Scott Grix is heading for a return to West Yorkshire after agreeing to join Castleford when he departs the Black and Whites later this year.

And now, another former Super League head coach will take up a role in Castleford’s staff too in the shape of Robinson.

Love Rugby League understands that the Tigers have been holding talks with Robinson for a number of weeks, even before Carr’s suspension in shock circumstances last week.

They have been keen to bring him into their staff as a number two and another assistant, initially to work under Carr – but now to work under a new head coach. There is no suggestion at this stage Robinson would be in contention to be the head coach of Castleford in 2027.

A deal has not yet been struck but both parties are keen to work together going into next season – though Chris Chester hinted on Thursday morning that something could happen even sooner than that.

He suggested that Castleford would be looking for a more immediate addition to their coaching ranks after Carr’s suspension, with a decision likely in the coming days on whether he will be staying or moving on. It remains highly likely at this stage that he leaves the club.

That could mean Robinson joins for the rest of this season, but irrespective of that, he appears likely to be joining the club in 2027 no matter what.

Robinson returns to Super League

The move for Robinson marks a fairly swift return to coaching in Super League for the former Huddersfield head coach.

He left the Giants at the start of this season after a difficult opening to the 2026 campaign, and was ultimately replaced by Jim Lenihan.

Robinson retains a desire to get back into coaching and after a short break over the summer, now looks set to land elsewhere in West Yorkshire.

Chester admitted any move for a new coaching member would be important to allow him to continue to build Castleford’s squad for 2027 and step away from helping coach the team himself.

He said: “We’re obviously looking for some (coaching) reinforcements because at the moment I’ve just got one coach and Rob Nickolay who is assisting. We want to try and bring someone in to try and assist and help around the training to allow me to do my day to day job.”

And that man could now be Robinson.
