Wigan Warriors forward Kaide Ellis has been sent off for a headbutt on Stefan Ratchford less than seven minutes into the Challenge Cup quarter-final tie with Warrington.

Ellis, 26, was named at loose forward ahead of the clash by head coach Matt Peet. Wigan will now be forced to play the remainder, and majority, of the match with 12 men.

It’s the second red card this weekend following Josh Griffin’s sending off after half-time during Hull’s clash with St Helens at the MKM Stadium.

Despite going down to 12, Wigan opened the scoring through on-loan centre Toby King – against his parent club.

WATCH: Kaide Ellis in act of stupidity

The sending off by referee Liam Moore has seen the majority of a one-sided response, with rugby league fans in support of the huge decision.

@Dan_RL6 said on Twitter: “Alike with Griffin yesterday, Kaide Ellis’ act was just as stupid and has earned him a red card – two headbutts to Ratchford & he’s gone.”
@TomStirk1992 wrote: “That is absolute stupidity from Kaide Ellis there.”

Commentating on BBC 5 Live Sport, ex-St Helens back-rower and Grand Final winner Jon Wilkin said: “His actions there have really cost the Wigan team.

“The referee has to send him off. It’s just poor, it’s terrible from Kaide Ellis. It’s a shocker.”
