Wigan full-back Jai Field says he ‘would love’ off-contract team-mate Bevan French to stay with the Warriors beyond the current campaign.

French, 26, is still yet to confirm his future. However, he has stated that an announcement will be made in the “very near future” as speculation continues to grow.

The former Parramatta Eels outside-back scored seven tries to break the record for most tries in a Super League game in their 60-0 demolition of Hull last Friday.

He has scored 39 tries in 39 Super League appearances for the DW Stadium side, with his partnership with Field growing stronger each week.

Speaking to Jenna Brooks on Sky Sports, Field said he would like to see his team-mate stay with the club. However, French is yet to even tell his team-mates where his future lies.

“Obviously I would love for him to stay,” French said on Sky Sports.

“For what he can do for the side and for Super League, he’s great for the game.

“At the end of the day, he’s probably got to do what’s for him and his family at the moment. I’m still not sure what he’s going to do. He keeps his cards pretty close to his chest.

Bevan French provides update on his future

The Australian speedster has made no secret of his desire to return to the NRL one day.

French made 47 appearances for Parramatta in the NRL since his debut in May 2016 and scored 35 tries overall. He joined Wigan halfway through the 2019 season after being granted a release from the Eels.

“Hopefully in the very near future,” he replied when asked about an announcement on his future.

“I know there’s only eight games left so I want to sort that out as soon as I can.

“I have just sort of taken a back step with that and let my manager take the reins. I’m sure he’ll do what is best for me and we’ll go from there.”
