Warrington coach Daryl Powell commended Super League newcomers Toulouse after the Wolves’ 32-18 victory in the south of France.

Powell’s side enjoyed a strong first half at the Stade Ernest Wallon as they led 16-2 at the break. However, Toulouse staged a second half fightback and pushed their visitors until the very end.

Speaking after the game, Powell said: “You have to give credit to Toulouse, they fought to the end. But we need to be a whole lot better.

“I thought we were scratchy to be honest, we lacked energy and we’ll review it and talk through all the reasons for that.

“I’d like to say well done to Toulouse, they came after us with real intent and we had to scramble to keep them out.

“But for us we need to find another level. We need a few more gears in the coming weeks and we were way off the standard we need today.

“They started better than us, we’ve been penned in our own half at the start of all three games we’ve played so far so we need to work on that.

“We’ve won the game and we’re three from three but I’d have hoped for us to take a step forward tonight but I think we’ve taken a couple of steps backwards.

“We need to find out the reasons why, we’ve got some players coming back next week which will obviously help.”
