George Williams injury update: Warrington Wolves star provides the latest on hamstring
Having being named in Warrington’s 21-man squad, marquee man George Williams has admitted that he will not face St Helens this Friday in Super League.
During his weekly press conference with media, head coach Daryl Powell said that the England international would be given every chance to make the team ahead of the Round 18 clash.
The half-back has been sidelined for the last two weeks due to a hamstring injury, missing the defeats to Castleford and Leeds respectively in the competition.
Powell said Williams had an ‘outside chance’ ahead of the visit of reigning champions St Helens, who have won five of their last six Super League fixtures.
“We’re not going to take any risks with him. He needs to be right and he needs to be ready to go,” the 57-year-old coach said.
“We won’t make any rash calls on him, that’s for sure.”
Williams was a notable guest at Wimbledon for his first time ever on Wednesday, with former world number #1 Novak Djokovic up against Australian Jordan Thompson on centre court.
The 28-year-old was interviewed by Sky Sports during their coverage, and admitted that Friday’s game comes too soon for the former Wigan playmaker to make his return to action.
Warrington star George Williams on recovery
“They’re the world champions for a reason,” Williams said previewing the clash.
“We need to be at our best to win.
“We’re a bit down on form, so it’s a must-win game for us and it’ll be a massive turning point in our season if we do win.”
On his recovery, he continued: “I’m cracking on with my rehab, I won’t be too far away.
“I obviously won’t play this week, but I’m hoping to play against Wigan the following week.”
