Leigh coach Adrian Lam has teased new signings, saying he hopes to add ‘one or two’ players to his squad over the next month or so.

The Leopards have enjoyed a terrific start to life back in Super League, having won six from 11 games so far. They currently sit sixth in the table, occupying a play-off spot.

And speaking in his weekly press conference ahead of Friday’s trip to Huddersfield, Lam says he is looking to further improve his squad by bringing in a couple of new additions over the next month or so.

He said: “I am happy because we’re just doing things that we want to see, more pictures on the field of who we are in terms of the DNA of the club.

“I still feel that whilst I’m happy and excited of where we are, that I still feel we’ve got a couple of levels to go to, I genuinely mean that.

“I want to also build the squad by adding one or two players over the next month or so, so watch this space.

“It is something we’re striving for really hard here. At the start of the year a lot of people of saying we were in the box-seat to go down – straight up and relegated – and that’s the way its been with Super League and clubs being promoted and I understand all of that. But we’ve just been working hard on staying in our bubble and looking what is in front of us at the moment and not looking back.

“We’re going okay at the moment, we’ve got to make sure we keep our feet grounded and be honest with what we’re all about week by week.”

Adrian Lam: Retention of key players is crucial

The Leopards have nine players out of contract at the end of the season – Ben Reynolds, Kai O’Donnell, Ben Nakubuwai, Tom Nisbet, Aaron Smith, Nathan Wilde, Ava Seumanufagai, Joe Wardle and Jacob Jones.

Lam says it is ‘crucial’ for them to retain their best players beyond this season as they look to build a long-term future in Super League.

He said: “It’s crucial for us to keep the players we want to keep and not allow them to go anywhere else.

“I think everyone here is in a really good space in their own line with rugby league and where they are at which is great.

“We’re in the process of making sure everyone is secured for next year and we’re pretty confident that’ll be the case.

“Obviously there’s always a case of dilemma thrown in there at some stage but we’ll manage those processes and fingers crossed, it doesn’t happen.

“But on top of that, we’ve got to look at bringing players in who we feel can help us grow as a club and help take us to the next level.”
