Tomkins says “no truth” in Powell signing reports

Wigan full back Sam Tomkins says the Warriors players have been told there’s no truth in reports that the club have signed Wales rugby union forward Andy Powell.

Steve Diamond, chief executive at Powell’s current club Sale Sharks, said earlier this week that Powell was leaving the Salford City Stadium at the end of the current Premiership season to sign a three-year deal with the Super League leaders.

Writing in his column on the Daily Mail, Tomkins said: “A story appeared in the press this week saying Sale’s Andy Powell was crossing codes and joining Wigan.

“I can see why the link came about with Iestyn Harris being part of our coaching staff but the squad were told there was absolutely no truth in it – sorry to be the bearer of bad news.”

Powell has long been targeted for a code-switch – former Wigan coach Brian Noble tried to take him to Crusaders in 2010, and he is likely to feature in Wales‘ Rugby League World Cup squad if he does indeed make the switch to the 13 man code.
