NRL will give Kallum Watkins a lift, says Wayne Bennett

Wayne Bennett believes Gold Coast Titans’ new recruit Kallum Watkins will live up to the hype in the NRL.

The 28-year-old will link up with the Titans from July 1.

Watkins – who has earned 25 caps for England – will leave Leeds after 12 years at the club.

Great Britain coach Bennett commented: “I’m really pleased for Kallum.

“I’ve noticed with Kallum that the higher the standard the game is – the more he lifts himself.

“I just think he needs that level of competition now to find out just how good he is because he is a wonderful player.

“He’s had a bit of a tough time with his knee reconstruction and they knock you around the field a bit.

“It can take you another 12 months of rehab to get you back to your best and it’s not a nice injury and it’s taken a fair bit of time but he’s got half a season behind him now and the Gold Coast will be good for him.

“They will challenge him and the competition will challenge him.”
