Warrington coach Daryl Powell believes England international Danny Walker has the potential to become one of the best hookers in the game.

Walker, who made his international debut for England in their 64-0 mid-season win over France, put in a man of the match performance to help the Wolves beat Huddersfield 30-26 at the Halliwell Jones Stadium on Saturday night.

Speaking after the game, Powell praised Walker for his leadership within the group this season.

He said: “If you look at tonight, he kicks a 40/20, he sets the first try up and he scores a try just after half-time with his support play.

“He’s got great leadership about him in and around the place.

“He’s a little dynamo, he gets after things defensively.

“I thought he was phenomenal tonight, it was a really strong performance from him.

“He deserved the man of the match and I think he’s just going to get better and better.

“He had a look at England earlier in the year and you can just see him prospering and growing and being one of the best nines in the game.”

Daryl Powell praises star man for putting his hand up to play

Powell revealed that star man George Williams put his hand up to play in their win over Huddersfield despite battling a sickness bug.

Powell added: “George was ill all last night so I thought he did well to get through the game to be honest.

“He was throwing up in the changing rooms so I thought it was a big effort for him to get through.

“George was always going to play, he is one of those blokes. I reckon there’d be a few other blokes, I’m not saying in our team, who’d pull out there but that’s a fair effort from him.

“I’d spoken to him this afternoon, he’d only had toast so he was in a bit of trouble so for him to do that shows the character he’s got.”

Hooker Daryl Clark left the field for a head injury assessment with 15 minutes of the game remaining and didn’t return, but speaking in his post-match presser, Powell said he didn’t know if Clark had passed or failed his HIA.

He said: “I’m not 100% certain. I don’t think he did (fail his HIA), he had stitches on his eye. We got to the point were we had a sub left so I put Gil (Dudson) on there and we were fine.”

Warrington will now turn their attention to the Challenge Cup with a trip to the DW Stadium to face rivals Wigan next Sunday, 2:30pm kick-off.
