Canberra star John Bateman to require further shoulder surgery

Drew Darbyshire

Canberra have confirmed John Bateman will require additional surgery which will keep him sidelined for an extended period.

The Great Britain and England international met with a surgeon today and the best cause of action was determined to undergo surgery. A time frame on his recovery will be known post-surgery.

Bateman said: “I’m gutted to be having surgery again but it’s what’s best for me and the team and to help me get back on the field as soon as possible.

“I’ll be working harder than ever with my rehab to get myself back on the field with the lads. See you all soon.”

Meanwhile, Bateman’s fellow Englishman Ryan Sutton should be fit for selection in round five of the NRL season after battling a minor calf injury.

Sutton sustained the injury at training early last week and was close to being available for round four, but Canberra have decided to give him another week to make sure he’s 100% right on his return.
