Wane interested in hybrid game

Wigan Warriors head coach Shaun Wane has revealed he would be interested in a hybrid game if it increases the profile of the sport.

The Warriors announced the possibility of a hybrid game after linking up with Saracens RU in pre-season but nothing has been announced since.

Wane believes the game may have merit if it would promote league but admits the decision is not up to him. He said: “It’s in Ian’s (Lenagan) hands.”

“If it increases the profile of rugby league – which, in my mind, is far and away the best sport in the world – I’ll go for it.

“I don’t buy into this argument about playing too many games. If it increases the profile of our sport, I’ll do it.”

Saracens spent time at Wigan’s training ground yesterday and included in the day trip, was Wigan legend Andy Farrell and Joel Tomkins who left the club earlier this year.

“They were here for the day, watching what we do and they were amazed how aggressive our training session was,” added Wane.

“They’ve been asking what we do and we’re getting things off them, how they do things. It’s been good.”

The interest comes just days after Leeds chief executive, Gary Hetherington admitted the Rhinos are looking into a similar fixture with union counterparts, Leicester Tigers.
