Despite their 16-4 defeat to Castleford, Wakefield avoided a new unwanted record thanks to a four-pointer from Samisoni Langi in their Super League Rivals Round clash.

Ahead of the fixture, Wakefield had been nilled four times so far in 2023, equalling the Super League record with Celtic Crusaders from back in 2009.

Trinity failed to score any points Wigan, Huddersfield, Leeds and St Helens previously this season.

But off-season recruit, Langi, 29, made sure that the Belle Vue oufit did not create more history against the Tigers by scoring a try in the second half at the Mend-A-Hose Jungle.

It wasn’t enough for the visitors, with opposition captain Paul McShane opening the scoring, and winger Greg Eden crossing for tries either side of half-time for a 16-4 result.

It means Wakefield continue their worst start to a Super League season, winless in their opening eight matches of 2023.

Mark Applegarth’s side now sit four points adrift at the foot of the table, with Castleford and Hull both with two wins so far this season.

Tony Smith’s Black & White could make it three on Good Friday with their derby against Hull KR at the MKM Stadium, with a 12:30pm kick-off live on Sky Sports.

Andy Last: Mark Applegarth is a good, young coach and I wish him the best of luck

Following the victory, Castleford interim head coach Andy Last showed his class on Sky Sports speaking to Jenna Brooks.

He said: “I feel really sad for Wakefield, I spent a year there and there’s some great people there.

“Mark Applegarth is a good, young coach and I wish him the best of luck.

“Mason Lino really tested us. They put on some real quality shapes. We had to turn them away and we had to be good defensively. They didn’t quite nail a couple of opportunities that they got.

“I think our right edge got a real test there.

“They tested us with some shapes and they’ll score some points moving forward.

“They’ll be disappointed that they lost tonight, but they’re a good side with good players and I know they’ll be working hard.”
