With the departure of Johnathon Ford, Toulouse Olympique have appointed Tony Gigot as the club’s new captain for 2022.

Head coach Sylvain Houles has named utility Gigot as their new captain for their first season in Super League.

Maxime Puech is club’s vice-captain for 2022.

Gigot joined the French side in 2021 after impressing for hometown club Avignon in the French Elite 1 Championship.

The utility re-signed with the club earlier in November. He also captained France in last year’s end of season test against England.

Houles said: “Tony is a great rugby player. He has grown up well and who is respected by everyone at the club.

“He has reached a very good level of maturity which will allow him to lead the team and achieve our objectives, including maintaining the highest level of European Rugby League.”

Long-serving Ford, 32, left the club due to ‘personal reasons’ less than three weeks before their first Super League game.

His exit came a week after it was confirmed that Toulouse were in talks with unvaccinated players. However, the club has confirmed that they expect no more departures ahead of the season opener.

Puech appointed vice-captain

“Since his arrival at the Toulouse Olympique, over the years we have been able to see Max’s impact on the group and his leadership,” said Houles.

“With his logical mind, he understands how to move the group forward together and his mental strength makes him the ideal choice to support Tony.”
