Tim Lafai could make his Salford debut against Castleford in the opening weekend of Super League.

Salford head coach Paul Rowley has confirmed that the centre is in contention to make his first competitive appearance for the club against Castleford.

Lafai only landed in the UK at the end of January. He featured in the club’s pre-season friendly against Warrington at the Halliwell Jones Stadium. The fixture also celebrated Lee Mossop’s testimonial.

The 30-year-old previously featured for Canterbury Bulldogs and St George Illawarra in the NRL. He has represented Samoa at two World Cups, but makes the switch to Salford on a one-year deal.

“He had half a game against Warrington just to basically get some milage and get used to taking the hits,” said Rowley.

“I thought he looked really competent and really solid on that edge.

“He’s fitting in really well. It’s just a short turnaround for him.

“Ideally, he would have been here a lot earlier. But it’s funny in a rugby club because one week in and you’re just like a part the furniture. He is definitely settled in and is one of the lads now in every way, shape and form.

“But obviously just lacking that that mileage under his boots.

“I have to put him in consideration. He’ll be in the squad.”

Centre Dan Sarginson could also make a welcomed return after serving his three-match ban.

He did not appear in the friendlies against Swinton, Halifax or Warrington for Salford.
