Warrington half-back Josh Drinkwater has not been named in the line-up to take on Castleford at the Mend-A-Hose Jungle on Friday evening.

Instead, centre Peter Mata’utia has been named in the halves to partner England international George Williams.

It’s a somewhat surprise exclusion for the 30-year-old, who was named in the initial 21-man squad earlier this week.

Drinkwater had started in every game so far this season. He crossed for his first try in Wire colours against Leigh in the 38-20 victory last week at the Halliwell Jones Stadium.

Daryl Powell’s side look to maintain their unbeaten start to the season, with five wins from five so far this year, putting them at the top of the Super League table.

Gil Dudson has been named on the bench to make his official Warrington debut after suffering a broken hand in the pre-season fixture with Leigh. The Wales international made the switch from Catalans ahead of 2023 on a two-year deal.

Winger Matty Russell has also been named for his second Warrington debut after returning to the side from Toulouse for 2023.
