Former St George and Parramatta hooker Mark Riddell has returned to the NRL by signing with the Sydney Roosters.

Riddell, 29, has signed on a one-year deal with the Bondi club after spending the previous two seasons with Wigan in Super League.

Nicknamed ‘Piggy’ for his ample stature, Riddell will push current dummy-half Jake Friend for a starting spot but will also provide cover at second row.

“I am looking forward to the challenge of playing in the NRL again,” said Riddell.

“I established a good relationship with Smithy while I was at the Eels and I am very happy to be joining up with him again. Jason Ryles and Anthony Minichiello are also great mates of mine so I’m looking forward to playing footy with them as well.”

Roosters Head Coach Brian Smith said the recruitment was a strong one ahead of the 2011 season.

“Mark is a great player who can bring a lot to the club,” said Smith.

“He has plenty of experience and will fit into our system here well. We are looking forward to him starting.”

Riddell will commence training on December 16 after a club medical.
