Penkywicz targets Northern Rail Cup glory

Leigh hooker Sean Penkywicz is hoping for hometown glory when the Centurions play Sheffield Eagles in the climax of the 2013 Northern Rail Cup at The Shay, Halifax, on Saturday July 20 (5.00).

Penkywicz has experienced both joy and heartache in the Northern Rail Cup final with his former club Halifax but insists he would swap past glories for Leigh Centurions to win silverware on Saturday.

“We’re all really looking forward to the game on Saturday.” said Penkywicz. “I really enjoyed playing in last year’s final with Halifax when we beat Featherstone.

“Winning man of the match in the final last year was a nice achievement but I’d swap personal accolades every time if it meant the team winning.

“It would be really special to get the win especially playing for my hometown club. The Leigh fans are great and when you play at a neutral venue it’s even more important for them to cheer and give the team a boost.”

Penkywicz is relishing the chance to return to his old stomping ground but vows it won’t have an impact once the whistle blows.

“I’m looking forward to returning to The Shay, I don’t think playing there will give me an advantage, all the players on the field will have played a game or two there,” he said  “It will be nice to see some of the Halifax fans again hopefully they will be cheering me on.

“Sheffield are one of the best teams in the Championship, they are having a great year so far. When you get to the final of a competition you want to be playing the best teams and hopefully we will get the win.”
