Salford boss Paul Rowley believes Warrington loanee Ellis Longstaff has the potential of becoming a special player in the game.

Longstaff, 20, linked up with the Red Devils ahead of the 2023 campaign on a season-long loan.

The utility, who can play in the back-row or in the centres, found himself on loan at Hull last season upon the arrival of Daryl Powell at the Halliwell Jones Stadium.

He quickly established himself a popular figure at the MKM Stadium, scoring six tries in 10 games, before heading to the AJ Bell Stadium for 2023.

The England Knights representative has somewhat had to remain patient this year, making his Salford debut against his former club in Round Three.

He has made a further six appearances under Rowley, including wins over Hull, Leigh, Castleford, Catalans and most recently Leeds at Headingley Stadium.

“He has been really good, Ellis,” Rowley told Love Rugby League.

“He’s took himself seriously – I feel like he’s matured somewhat as a person and as a player.

“He’s more studious in his game the player now than when he first came to the club. That’s not saying he was poor when he came to the club, I just see a development in him which is important.

“He’s had to be patient because he’s put a lot of training performances in, and sometimes I think we forget he’s only 20 years of age.

“There will be more times where he has to be patient as well. He played very good last week, his energy and work ethic was fantastic.”

Ellis Longstaff only going to get better says Rowley

Longstaff was a try-scorer in the 22-12 win over Leeds, scoring his first for the club against his parent club.

To date, he has made 15 appearances for Warrington since his debut in 2020, and Rowley has predicted a bright future for the youngster.

“He’s been great to have in the team,” Rowley continued.

“I’ve really enjoyed working with Ellis, he’s a good lad and all the lads like him.

“He’s a popular kid who’s going to be a really good rugby player when he grows up, I’ll say.

“When he gets a little bit older, he’s going to progress into something potentially pretty special I think.

“He’s going to get better. It’s exciting.

“He’s a good rugby player with a good leg speed.

“His attitude has been fantastic, I’ve got nothing bad to say about Ellis at all. It’s been an absolute pleasure to have him at this club.”
