Oldham prop Ben Davies suffered a ‘seriously nasty’ mouth injury in their recent Challenge Cup defeat by Widnes.

The 29-year-old, who played for Widnes between 2012-13, clashed heads with team-mate Jack Spencer in the Roughyeds’ 54-14 loss to the Vikings in Sunday’s fourth round Challenge Cup tie.

Davies, who came through Wigan’s academy, left the field with a bloody mouth and was taken to hospital. He is set to miss Sunday’s League 1 trip to Newcastle Thunder.

Oldham coach Scott Naylor said: “It was seriously nasty, one of the worst injuries of its kind I’ve seen.”

Roughyeds quartet Aaron Jones-Bishop, Anthony Bowman, Lee Kershaw and Matty Wilkinson could return to face Newcastle.
