Keary signs new Rabbitohs deal

South Sydney have extended the contract of young halves prospect Luke Keary until the end of the 2015 season.

Keary, 21, has played seven NRL games since making his debut against Newcastle in Round 12, scoring his two NRL tries against Gold Coast in round 20.

The playmaker was also one of the leading lights in the North Sydney Bears’ NSW Cup side this year and the Rabbitohs’ under 20s side in 2012, being selected in the Under 20s Team of the Year last season.

Rabbitohs head coach Michael Maguire says Keary has a bright future ahead of him at South Sydney.

“Luke is only just starting his NRL career but if he maintains his level of professionalism and his willingness to learn then he has a big future in front of him.

“He’s developed his game through the under 20s and NSW Cup competitions, and even before he came to us he had played a handful of Queensland Cup games as well.

“He’s shown us that he is prepared to do the hard work and he’s ready to build on his game, and his competitive drive fits the mould of the players we want at this club to make us successful as a team.

“We’re happy to know that he will be with us for at least the next two seasons and we’re looking forward to working with him as he works hard to establish his spot in our first grade side.”

The player himself is very happy to have his future sorted and he said, “I’m over the moon that Souths have given me the opportunity to stay on at least until the end of 2015.

“I look forward to working with the coaching staff and the playing squad that we have here at the Rabbitohs, as I think it’s a special time here and I’m looking forward to playing my role in what we are trying to build here.”
