Jy Hitchcox calls time on career, aged 33

Australian outside-back Jy Hitchcox has announced his retirement from the sport, aged 33. 

The full-back, winger or centre made his professional debut with Wests Tigers in 2014. He then made the switch to England with Featherstone Rovers in the Championship the following season.

Hitchcox played in the 2017 Grand Final for Castleford, and won promotion with Toulouse to Super League in 2021.

Other clubs included Bradford, Leigh and Rochdale Hornets.

“I’ve decided to call time on my professional playing career,” he shared on social media.

“A tough decision but ultimately the right one. Since a six year old boy, footy is all I’ve ever known. Just a kid from the bay with a steeden (ball) under my arm with dreams and ambitions to play this great game, however I was often told my pipe dream would only ever be just that.

“Yet for the last 13 years it’s taken me to every professional tier in the world. From never leaving my hometown to 30+ countries visited, playing around Australia, UK, France and back again. It led me to my partner, my children, my best friends and gave me a life that as a boy I could only ever have dreamt of.

“It’s been a hell of a ride and I’ve made so many special friendships along the way.

“I’ve had some incredible highs and some gut wrenching lows, both which have prepared me for life’s new challenges. I just wanted to take a minute to thank everyone that’s helped me along my journey and the coaches and clubs that gave me an opportunity.”
