Wigan coach Matt Peet has revealed that star man Jai Field is very close to making a return to action.

The Australian speedster has been out for two months since suffering a hamstring injury in their 34-6 win at Leigh on March 30.

Speaking in his weekly press conference, Peet said there’s a chance he could play against Catalans Dragons at Magic Weekend on Saturday, but is not a definite at this stage.

Peet said: “No-one drops out. It is potential that Jai Field could come back in but it would be a genuine 50-50 at the moment.

“It might be that he waits another week for the St Helens game but he’s champing at the bit.

“He’s a very diligent kid. Naturally, he is one of our fittest players and he is a natural runner so it has probably been a case of holding him back and making sure he is doing the right volume at the right time and our staff do a good job there.

“I was really enthused with how Kaide Ellis came back from his injury and he played big minutes in the Leeds Challenge Cup game. When Jai or any of the other lads who are out, when they do come back, we take a lot of pride that they do come back fit.”

Wigan coach praises Ryan Hampshire upon return

Peet says he has been impressed with utility back Ryan Hampshire since his return from the treatment room.

Hampshire has made four appearances for the Warriors since returning from an 11-month injury lay-off.

Peet said: “I think Ryan Hampshire deserves special credit on how he has performed over the last two games.

“With a short turnaround in there after so long out with injury, I think he can be really proud of how he is playing.”

Peet also provided an update on prop Brad Singleton, who could return within the next two or three weeks from a calf injury.

Peet added: “He’s doing well. I don’t think he’ll be far off, I don’t think it will be this week. I think it could be St Helens or the Cup game.”

Wigan take on Catalans at Magic Weekend in Newcastle on Saturday, 3:45pm kick-off.
