Challenge Cup round-up: Barrow and Featherstone continue impressive forms & Whitehaven beat York

Barrow continued their impressive form in 2022 following their 32-18 Challenge Cup victory over Workington live on the BBC. 

A late brace from Jarrod Sammut helped secure their spot in the sixth road.

Barrow forward Tom Hopkins opened the scoring, but Workington soon took the lead through Conor Fitzsimmons, Jamie Doran and John Hutchings. Half-back Ryan Johnston hit back for the hosts before the break for an 18-12 score to Workington. 

Skipper Jarrad Stack scored the first of the second half, before tries from Sammut and Tee Ritson for Paul Crarey’s side.

Saturday’s only game saw an 80-point clash in Wales as Sheffield defeated North Wales Crusaders 50-30. 

Matty Chrimes scored four tries for the visitors while Anthony Thackeray had an influential game for the Eagles, crossing for a try. 

Liam Johnson, Izaac Farrell, Kris Welham, Blake Broadbent and Joel Farrell also scoring.

Whitehaven score 38 past York in Challenge Cup

Whitehaven scored 38 points to defeat York 38-12 at home.

Andrew Bulman opened the scoring for the hosts six minutes into the clash. Connor Holliday, Ryan King, Geronimo Doyle, Nikau Williams all scoring in the first 40 for a 28-0 lead.

Second half tries from Jake Moore and Holliday helped secure the spot in the sixth round.

Featherstone maintain 100% record in 2022

Brian McDermott’s Featherstone are yet to taste defeat in 2022 across the Championship or the Challenge Cup. They travelled to the Fox’s Biscuits Stadium and defeated Batley 54-20.

Batley opened the scoring through Greg Johnson, but the visitors soon took control of the game. Ryley Jacks scored his first try for Featherstone since making the move from Australia. Further points from Craig Hall (2), Adam Cuthbertson, Brandon Pickersgill, Luke Cooper, Brett Ferres and Luke Briscoe.

Rovers return to Batley next weekend in the Championship competition.

Leigh travel to Odsal Stadium to face Bradford on Monday night in the last fixture of the fifth round. The tie will be live on Premier Sports.

The Challenge Cup sixth round draw will be held on Monday, March 14 and broadcast live from Elland Road in front of the BBC cameras.
