Catalans Dragons have expressed an interest in Wakefield’s out-of-contract winger Tom Johnstone.

Johnstone, 26, has been open to offers since May 1 and is on the radar of Steve McNamara’s team. His current contract at Belle Vue expires at the end of the current season.

He has scored 81 tries in 106 Super League appearances so far in his career.

Catalans confirm interest in Tom Johnstone

“We’ve been made aware of Tom’s availability for season 2023,” Catalans general manager Alex Chan said. “Whether we can stitch that up or not, I’m not sure just yet.

“Obviously Steve that makes the final decision but he’s a player who is exciting to watch and is definitely of some interest.

“At the end of the day, we’re trying to retain the squad we currently have and keep everyone together.”

Catalans will need to make room under in their salary cap in 2023 for Sydney Roosters prop Sio Siua Taukeiaho. The 30-year-old Tonga international is thought to have agreed to join them when his contract with his NRL club runs out at the end of the year.

The Dragons are already losing second rower Joe Chan to Melbourne and front rowers Sam Kasiano and Gil Dudson are both out of contract this season.

Sam Tomkins set for return

Meanwhile, England captain Sam Tomkins could make his return from injury against Warrington in Perpignan on Saturday.

The 33-year-old full-back recently signed a new deal for the 2023 campaign.

Tomkins is back in training after suffering a fractured fibula in his side’s Challenge Cup defeat by St Helens in April.

“He’s feeling pretty confident,” Chan said. “Certain players can heal faster than others.

“He is ahead of schedule but we’re going to wait until the last minute to see if he is 110 per cent because you don’t really want to take a risk with an injury like that.”
