Betts: We can use this win as a platform

Widnes head coach Denis Betts confessed Friday’s victory over St Helens might be the catalyst for the Vikings to push on for the rest of the campaign after a gruelling run of recent matches.

The Vikings edged to a 16-14 victory over Saints to record their first home win of the season.

“We wanted something out of the Easter period just to kick-start our year,” he said.

“We haven’t had a training session and Saints probably won’t have had a training session. We checked the players, made sure they were right and they were in the side.”

Betts was pleased that his team got over the line, but conceded several players weren’t match fit.

“Joe [Mellor] has only played a couple of games. Tom [Gilmore] has only played a couple of games in the halves,” he added.

“We’ve got two really young nines in there as well who were anxious and making mistakes.”
