The move will allow Leon Pryce to take up the stand-off role and take his successful St Helens partnership with Sean long onto the international stage.

Noble said: "In a lot of ways it helps us a little bit. Five or six of the team are from the same club and the half-back partnership is one that has been very successful in our domestic competition."

Gareth Raynor will replace Pryce on the wing for the time being, but officials are confident that McGuire will return in time for next week’s crucial New Zealand game.

The Lions will put one foot into the final with a win over the Kangaroos following the Kiwis’ points-deduction for fielding an ineligible player.

Australia coach Ricky Stuart will se Willie Mason make his return to the team along with former Saints captain Jamie Lyon, and will also introduce Ben Hornby, Shaun Berrigan, Brent Tate to the side.
