Former Salford coach Phil Veivers has been named as the new boss of Championship side Workington.

Veivers, 49, was sacked by Red Devils owner Marwan Koukash in March last year, after 15 months in charge.

Prior to his time at the AJ Bell Stadium, the Australian spent seven years as Brian Noble’s assistant at Wigan and Bradford.

Town, the last Cumbrian side to play in Super League, are currently ninth in the Championship following the resignation of Gary Charlton last month.

Veivers’ first match in charge will come away at Barrow on Sunday.
