Wilkin a doubt for Super League play-offs

St Helens could be without Jon Wilkin for the engage Super League play-offs after the forward suffered a knee injury in training on Wednesday.

Wilkin will definitely be left on the sidelines for Saints’ game against Leeds Rhinos on Friday night.

The injury could also keep Wilkin out of the Gillette Four Nations although St Helens coach Mick Potter said he may be able to play for England at some stage.

“He couldn’t get through training. He’s got some floating cartilage in there and at some stage he’ll need a clear-out,” said Potter.

“We’re trying to stave it off to the end of the season but I wouldn’t think it would rule him out for the complete [Four Nations] tournament.”

Meanwhile, Saints will welcome Maurie Fa’asavalu back from injury for Friday’s game against the Rhinos.

Fa’asalavu suffered a broken arm in the win at Warrington Wolves in July but has now been given clearance to return to the action.

“It’s a bonus to get Maurie back,” said Potter. “He was out for 10 weeks so we get at least a week’s grace. He adds a bit of spark from the bench.”

The game between Saints and Leeds will probably decide who will win the League Leaders’ Shield.
