Wigan head coach Matt Peet has revealed Bevan French has not yet returned to UK due to testing positive for Covid-19.

French, 26, was due to land back in the UK earlier last week.

However, the full-back has been delayed in Australia after testing positive for Covid-19.

Wigan face Leeds this Friday at the DW Stadium as Peet’s side look to make it two from two under his new leadership. They opened their campaign with a victory at Hull KR.

Bevan French return delayed by COVID

During his pre-match press conference, Peet confirmed that French has been delayed due to a positive result.

French had returned to Australia last year after suffering a season-ending hamstring injury in June. He has undergone his rehabilitation Down Under, whilst also looking after his mother, who sadly passed away earlier this year.

Peet said: “Believe it or not when he got to the airport to jump on the flight, he tested positive for Covid.

“That was far from ideal after waiting for so long and him being through what he has been through.

“He’s upset. It puts things on hold for eight or nine days. In the next couple of days, hopefully he’ll be on the flight.

“Bevan went to the airpot over the weekend. As soon as he tests negative, we’ll book him a new flight straight away. He’s testing twice a day. As soon as he gets a negative, he’ll be on the next flight”

Peet also confirmed that the club will be patient with French upon his return.

He added: “He’s been limited in what he can do. We’ll have to give him a couple weeks to catch up. Until he’s 100% fit and flying, he won’t play.”
