Wigan players celebrate beating Catalans Dragons 12-8 at the final whistle

Wigan have announced they will play friendlies against Newcastle and Warrington in January, as they prepare for the 2022 season.

The Warriors will run out for the first time under new Head Coach Matt Peet at Kingston Park. They will take on Newcastle, who have a number of former Wigan players in their squad.

Jake Shorrocks, Josh Woods and Craig Mullen all started their careers with Wigan, with Mitch Clark also joining the Thunder from the Warriors ahead of the 2022 season. Meanwhile, Bob Beswick, who retired, and Cian Tyrer who has left the club, also started out at Wigan.

That match will take place on 23rd January at 3pm.

The Warriors say they expect a youthful side to take to the field in Newcastle that day.

Their final match of pre-season will see them make the short trip to Warrington to take on the Wolves at the Halliwell Jones Stadium.

This match will also double up as Stefan Ratchford’s testimonial match. The game will take place on 29th January, kicking off at 5.30pm.

Here, Wigan say it will have a more of a first-team feel, as the Warriors prepare for the opening of the Super League season.

Wigan’s Super League opening

These two games for Wigan will come before their Super League opener away to Hull KR on 11th February. In the same game last season, Liam Marshall’s try would be the last time Wigan would score a try in over two-and-a-half matches.

The Warriors will then welcome Leeds, who knocked them out of the playoffs in 2021 after nilling them for the second time at the DW Stadium that year.

They will then enter the Challenge Cup at the sixth round stage. The games for this will take place at the end of March.
