Widnes home becoming a fortress

Denis Betts hailed his Widnes troops after they made it five home wins from five in 2014.

The Vikings made it back-to-back victories against St Helens, following up last season’s triumph at Langtree Park, with a 40-26 win at the Select Security Stadium on Monday.

It puts Betts’ side fifth in the Super League table, having picked up six wins from their nine games in charge.

He told the club’s official website: “It was a local derby on our home pitch in front of our home fans so the result is very pleasing.”

“We came very close over the last couple of years to getting a result against St Helens here and we got one today.

“I’m happy that we got result at home because you try and make these kinds of things into a fortress which we’re doing well.”

Widnes have beaten London, Huddersfield, Salford, Bradford and now Saints at home this season in what has been their best start ever to a Super League season.

Their other league win in 2014 was a 7-0 victory away at Hull.
