Oldham back rower Liam Thompson could be back within two to three weeks, with his back injury not as serious as first feared.

Thompson sustained the injury in the Roughyeds’ preseason friendly against Swinton on January 8, and subsequently aggravated in a minor car accident.

A scan on the problem has revealed a bulging disc, but it is not serious, and Thompson could return to action in two to three weeks.]

Prop Ben Davies, who also has a back problem, is also making progress towards a speedy return to action.

“It’s excellent news for both Liam and Ben and a huge positive for the club,” said Oldham chairman Chris Hamilton.

“We could see Liam back on the field soon, while Ben is coming along nicely and is itching to start contact work again.”

Meanwhile, George Tyson has cleared two games off his four-match ban, and will now be available for the home match against Dewsbury Rams on Sunday, March 5.
