St Helens coach Paul Wellens says they have a ‘burning desire’ to make it five Super League Grand Final wins in a row this year following their boost of confidence.

On Sunday, the Saints produced their best performance since returning from their World Club Challenge triumph in Australia with a 48-6 demolition of Huddersfield at Magic Weekend.

The champions have endured a mixed start to the season. They started the year in the best way possible with a 13-12 win over Penrith Panthers in the World Club Challenge but suffered a hangover upon their return from Australia.

Wellens’ side are currently sixth in the Super League table, having won eight from 13 games so far.

Speaking after their impressive win over Huddersfield at Magic, Wellens said he hopes their win can really kick-start their season.

He said: “You look at performances like this and look at our identity as a team, people will watch that and say ‘that’s a St Helens team we recognise’.

“We certainly want to build on that.

“We know the challenges are going to come as we know, there’s ups and there’s downs, but we know if we can pull together as a group like we have done today on a regular basis, then we’ll be very difficult to beat.”

Paul Wellens: St Helens desire burning for more silverware

St Helens have been Super League’s dominant club for the last four years, winning the Super League Grand Final in all four seasons as well as the Challenge Cup in 2021.

Wellens says they have more ambition than ever create even more history this year.

“The desire is burning,” he said.

“What this team will continue to do is be successful and what other team will be in a position to win five in a row again?

“The team know that what they’ve achieved already is special, but why can’t it be even more special?

“We won’t get carried away and talk about titles but what we’ve got to do is think about the here and now and keep working hard for each other and take confidence in the fact that if we do all the things that we saw today, we’ll have every chance of putting ourselves in those big games again.”

Next up for St Helens is a derby against rivals Wigan at the Totally Wicked Stadium on Friday night, 8pm kick-off.
