Sarginson and Bateman make their mark

Debutants Dan Sarginson and John Bateman both crossed for tries, as Wigan won 36-28 against neighbours Leigh.

Sarginson, 20, made an instant impact at centre, scoring twice and pleasing head coach Shaun Wane.

“Dan showed what a good player he is going to be for us, and I thought John did well too,” said Wane, who is taking extra care with former Bradford second-row Bateman.

“John hasn’t been well looked after, so we will look after him this year and I am sure next season we will see an even better player.”

Young winger Joe Burgess also impressed for the Cherry and Whites, scoring four tries in total, and with Josh Charnley currently injured, he may need to keep up that form.

Wane however believes that Charnley is on track to be fit for the start of the season.

He said, “Josh has done a lot of rehab work with the physios so he should play against Huddersfield, and then hopefully in Australia.”
