Salford ease past woeful Wire
Warrington’s search for a first Super League win goes on after suffering a 24-14 defeat at the hands of Salford at the AJ Bell Stadium.
Junior Sa’u put the Red Devils in front with four minutes on the clock, diving over after receiving George Griffin’s pass.
After an error-strewn opening quarter from the Wolves, Declan Patton picked out a good line to dart across and level the scores in the 25th minute.
Salford took the lead after Warrington failed to deal with Michael Dobson’s kick allowing Sa’u to flick the ball into George Griffin who spun over.
The Red Devils looked good to hold onto their lead but Jack Hughes had other ideas powering across with two minutes of the half to go. Declan Patton nailed the conversion to see the Wolves go in 10-8 at the break.
Tony Smith will have demanded that his team don’t concede silly penalties at the start of the second half, but that is exactly what Rhys Evans did with just a minute gone.
Moments later Kris Brining managed to twist and turn before grounding the ball with one hand. O’Brien added the extras to restore the home side’s lead.
The Wolves failed to improve on how they started the first half with a lacklustre opening 20 after the break but Jack Johnson dived across after a raking pass from Kurt Gidley.
Patton spurned the chance to put his side in front sending the conversion wide with 17 minutes to go.
The Wolves went behind once again, giving away another silly penalty which O’Brien slotted to give Salford a 16-14 lead with 12 minutes to go.
Sa’u looked to have killed the game off when he was the beneficiary of another piercing kick from Dobson before crossing over for his second try of the match.
Another penalty from O’Brien added insult to injury for the Wolves.
