Newcastle Knights appoint Brian McDermott as assistant coach

Former Leeds, Toronto and Featherstone boss Brian McDermott has been appointed as assistant coach at Newcastle Knights for the 2023 NRL season.  

The 52-year-old will work under head coach Adam O’Brien next season.

McDermott left his role at Featherstone following the conclusion of the 2022 Championship season, failing to make the final after losing to Batley in the play-offs.

He won four Grand Finals with Leeds alongside two Challenge Cups and the 2012 World Club Challenge.

Former half-back Michael Dobson has also joined the Knights has head of pathways, leading the junior development and pathways programs.

The Knights have also confirmed the appointment of former Manly assistant coach Michael Monaghan as full-time NSW Cup and development coach for next season. Matthew Jay will head up the high-performance team at the NRL club.

“We are delighted to be able to secure four such capable people,” said director of football Peter Parr.

“Brian brings a wealth of experience and has already established a strong relationship with Adam.

“Matt is highly regarded in the high-performance arena. To have someone with his experience and expertise will be hugely beneficial for the club.

“As a former Knights player Michael understands the importance of the pathways systems. We look forward to his input in these vitally important programs.

“Michael Monaghan is a highly credentialled coach following on from a decorated playing career, adding further expertise and experience to our coaching staff.”
