Dewsbury Rams head coach Liam Finn has added former rugby union winger Simon Frewin to his squad for the 2023 League 1 season.

Frewin, 35, signs a deal with the club after impressing during pre-season and featuring in friendlies against Bradford and Huddersfield.

The experienced winger has enjoyed a career in rugby union to date, featuring for the likes of Sandal, Coventry, Stourbridge and Sheffield Tigers.

On his move, Frewin said: “I’m really excited to sign for Dewsbury. I’ve always been a huge league fan even though I’ve played union all my life, so I feel really lucky I’ve got the opportunity to play for such a good club at this stage of my career.

“The trial games have gone great and we’ve got a talented squad. I’m looking forward to getting my chance in competitive fixtures soon and being a part of it.”

Liam Finn: “Simon is an outside the box signing”

Head coach Finn added: “Simon is an outside the box signing. An experienced union player who as a league fan was curious to see how he would do.

“After limited training he look comfortable during the last two friendlies.

“It will be good to see him improve rapidly the more he’s around the game and will be more than ready when his opportunity comes.”

Dewsbury, who were relegated last season, opened their League 1 campaign with a 38-18 victory over North Wales Crusaders last Sunday.

They host north west men’s premier division side Ashton Bears this weekend in the second round of the Challenge Cup.
