Kalyn Ponga commits long-term future to Newcastle

Newcastle star Kalyn Ponga has signed a new deal that will see him stay with the Knights until the end of 2024.

The 22-year-old has scored 20 tries in 44 appearances since joining the Knights from North Queensland ahead of the 2018 season.

Ponga has made three appearances for Queensland in the Origin arena, two appearances for the New Zealand Maori All Stars and played five games for Australia in the Nines World Cup last autumn.

Ponga said: “I feel at home here.

“My family are settled in Newcastle and it just feels right here at the Knights.

“I love the club, my team-mates and the main reason I re-signed is because I want to win a competition here.”

Knights coach Adam O’Brien said: “Today is a great day, not only for our team but also for our club supporters and sponsors.

“To secure a young man of Kalyn’s talent but also his character and connection with our playing group and staff is a huge boost for our Club. He forms a great connection to our team and importantly, our spine.

“Although he is only young, Kalyn has developed rapidly as a player and genuine leader of our team.

“It is an honour to coach Kalyn. He is already an elite athlete and his development is only going to continue.”
