Italy have named their train-on squad for the forthcoming World Cup qualifiers against Wales and Serbia, and it includes some interesting names.

There is a healthy contingent of Italian-Australians, with several Super League players, including Terry Campese and Josh Mantellato from Hull KR.

Canberra Raiders prop Paul Vaughan is one of the Australia-based contingent.

There is also a surprise selction, with Mirco Bergamasco, a former Italian rugby union international centre, included in the 65-man squad.

There are also 18 domestic players from six clubs in the squad.

Utility player Ryan Ghietti is delighted to be part of the squad.

“To be named in the Italian team has been my goal this year after being a part of the one that qualified for Italy’s first World Cup, that was a tremendous boost for the sport,” he said.

“Then to run out for Italy in all our matches in the 2013 was a huge honour and made me hungry to do it again.

“I am working hard to get named in the 17-man squad that runs out in Serbia next month to hopefully create more history.”
