Injury-hit Hull came out on top in a battling encounter against Wakefield at the KC Stadium.

Richard Whiting scored a brace of tries to help Richard Agar’s men, who were without seven first team players, to victory.

Wakefield took the lead when Daryl Millard was first to a Ben Jeffries kick, before Whiting’s double show gave the Airlie Birds a 12-4 advantage.

Damien Blanch‘s try late on reduced arrears for the Wildcats but the clock was against them, and despite declining the subsequent conversion, they couldn’t find the time to force another four points and fell short.

Wakefield boss John Kear said: “I thought there were two teams that gave a magnificent defensive effort and worked hard for each other.

“The fans pay to see people be proud in wearing the shirt and they saw that in bucketfuls on both sides.”
