Huddersfield face selection crisis ahead of St Helens clash

Huddersfield coach Simon Woolford says he is struggling to put out a team for Friday’s Super League clash with champions St Helens.

Full-back Ash Golding was concussed in the Giants’ defeat by Hull at the weekend and has joined Jon Luke Kirby, Chester Butler, Ukuma Ta’ai, Lee Gaskell, Adam Walne and Aaron Murphy on the sidelines.

Woolford has named Darnell McIntosh, Michael Lawrence, Kenny Edwards, Jake Wardle and captain Aidan Sezer in a 21-man squad but says they are all injury doubts.

In addition, prop Suaia Matagi is suspended and winger Innes Senior cannot be recalled from his loan spell at Wakefield for another fortnight.

Woolford said: “To say the situation is dreadful would be an understatement – we have just 16 fit today and will check on a number on the day itself and I can’t say I’ve ever seen as bad a situation as this.

“We just have to have faith in the guys were selecting and hope that this crisis lessens over the coming weeks.

“There will be opportunities for a number of lads this weekend and I look forward to seeing them grasp that.”
