Warrington coach Daryl Powell was full of praise for his side after they made it two wins from two with a 26-16 win at Huddersfield.

Speedster Matty Ashton bagged a brace for the Wolves, with captain Stefan Ratchford kicking five from five with the boot as they backed up their impressive win over Leeds in the Super League season opener.

Powell said: “To keep them out like we did was a phenomenal effort.

“That was a tough game. Our defensive effort and some of the class efforts like Matty Ashton… Our middle unit was phenomenal.

“That’s a big win for us. Not many teams come here and win. We’ve done a good job. We just have to keep doing what we’re doing.

“Defence is a big thing in rugby league, it’s the toughest thing to do. We’ve got put under pressure and we were clinging on in the last five minutes. The connection between the players and the fans was electric.

“I’m really pleased with our pack, and just our overall attitude. There was some really outstanding kicks from our half-backs.

“That second half was just a war of attrition. We hung in and kept them out until the last five minutes. It was really pleasing

“Both wingers were fantastic. Matty’s lightning, but he’s tough as well. He’s had an electric start to the season.

“Adam Holroyd did a good job. He’s a tough kid, he’s got a bright future.”

Daryl Powell: This team is different last year

Warrington had one of their worst seasons in 2022 as they finished second bottom. Powell insists this year’s squad is ‘completely different’.

He added: “This is a completely different outlook, the team is completely different.

“I don’t think anybody will be questioning the attitude or effort of this team. If we keep defending like that, we’ll take some beating.”
