Championship round-up: Featherstone survive Halifax scare & Leigh win again

Championship front-runners Featherstone came from behind against Halifax to maintain their perfect start to the season under Brian McDermott.

Halifax were leading 12-4 until the hour mark when Featherstone started their comeback through Morgan Smith. Two tries from Craig Hall in the last 20 minutes saw Rovers clinch a 22-12 win on home soil.

Featherstone’s Championship rivals Leigh continued their strong start to the season. The Centurions clinched a 34-18 win over Newcastle at the Leigh Sports Village.

Nene Macdonald, Ben Reynolds, Caleb Aekins, Aaron Smith and Keanan Brand scored for the hosts.

Sheffield ran in nine tries as they thumped Workington 54-4 at Derwent Park. Jamaica World Cup hopeful Izaac Farrell finished with a personal tally of 22 points in the Eagles’ big win in Cumbria.

Bradford narrowly edged past Batley 21-20 at Odsal thanks to a drop goal from Jordan Lilley in the 72nd minute.

Former Warrington half-back Dec Patton kicked four goals for the Bulls, whilst ex-Widnes playmaker Tom Gilmore kicked four for the Bulldogs. Liam Tindall, who is on loan at Bradford from Leeds, got on the scoresheet for John Kear’s side.

York were made to work for the two points by a dogged London side in the capital. Tries from Will Oakes, Ronan Michael, Liam Harris, Chris Clarkson and James Glover helped seal a 26-24 win for the Knights.

Italy international hooker Dean Parata bagged a brace for the Broncos. Fiji international Sitiveni Moceidreke kicked four goals for Jermaine Coleman’s outfit.

Whitehaven came up with an impressive 40-12 victory over Dewsbury at the Recreation Ground.

Tom Wilkinson, Jake Bradley, Guy Graham, Alex Bishop, Callum Phillips and Karl Dixon scored for Haven. Alex Bishop kicked eight goals.
