Featherstone Rovers boss calls for 14-team Super League competition

Featherstone Rovers chairman Mark Campbell has called for a 14-team Super League competition from the 2023 season. 

The side currently sit at the top of the Championship table and are favourites to win promotion to Super League for next season.

Brian McDermott’s side are yet to fall to their first defeat in the 2022 league campaign. They have claimed nine wins and one draw so far.

Former player and current Featherstone chairman Campbell has called for a 14-team competition in the top flight.

Speaking to George Riley, Campbell discussed his thoughts on IMG’s partnership with the sport.

He said: “I think just to get them on board is a massive statement for the game and shows what they must see for the potential of rugby league.

“We all know it’s a fantastic game to watch but we need more people to watch it. We need more people to buy into and we need showcase what we’ve got around the world and in this country.

“There are clubs struggling with finances and attendances but this company is the best in the world, so you can’t get any better.

“I take my hat off to Ralph Rimmer. He’s done a great job in getting them involved.”

He continued: “I think we need to structure out and I think the league needs to be 14 teams.

“It’s 12 at the moment but I think Featherstone and Leigh have proved over a number of years that they are Super League clubs on and off the field. I would have a 14 club competition from next season.”

Featherstone Rovers hold the second biggest average attendance so far in the 2022 Championship campaign. The leaders have an average attendance of 3,588. They travel to Dewsbury this Sunday.
