The England Mongrels have won the inaugural Rugby League Exiles Unofficial World Cup, beating Fiji UK 14-6 in Final at Weetwood, Leeds.

The Mongrels – consisting of Leeds based amateur players – earned their place the Grand Final by Winning Group A, finishing above The Celts and the newly formed Italian Exiles (sponsored by LoveRugbyLeague.com).

Group B saw Fiji edge out Great Britain Teachers and Maltese Exiles, the later being called by many as the match of the day.

The Wooden Spoon Game was won by GB Teachers over the Italians whilst the Maltese took 3rd by beating the Celts in hugely entertaining games, But it was the Mongrels who caused the upset by beating the much fancied Fijians.

Event organiser Carl Brown was pleased: “Everyone seems to have enjoyed the day. Thanks to the teams, officials, volunteers and the facility staff. Special thanks to our friends at LoveRugbyLeague.com”

He added “Hopefully we can build on this and have a bigger and even better event with even more Exiles in 2013!”
