Catalans have appointed former Hull and Widnes prop Eamon O’Carroll as assistant to Steve McNamara.

O’Carroll, 31, stepped up to assist Francis Cummins at Widnes last season following the departure of Denis Betts in May.

He was forced to retire from playing through in injury in 2017 and joined the Vikings coaching staff.

McNamara said: “Eamon is an extremely gifted young coach who’s enthusiasm and energy will be a great asset to the Dragons. He is very committed in everything that he does and we look forward to him adding his knowledge and skills to our existing group of staff and players.”

The former Ireland international came through the ranks at Wigan, and went on to play 149 games in Super League for three clubs.

He added: “I am very exited to be joining the Catalans Dragons. I am very grateful Bernard Guasch and Steve McNamara have given me the opportunity to join such a great club and develop as a coach.

“I look forward to meeting all the players/staff/fans and working hard towards building on last year’s success. As a player I always admired the club and it is a privilege for me to be part of it.”
