Warrington boss Daryl Powell believes Josh McGuire and Gil Dudson will be key to his side’s leadership for their 2023 Super League season.

The pair have made the move from St George Illawarra Dragons and Catalans Dragons respectively, both on two-year deals.

Warrington’s captaincy is currently vacant for next season following Jack Hughes’ move to Leigh. While the likes of Oliver Holmes, Jason Clark and Gareth Widdop have also left the club during the off-season.

Speaking to Brian Carney on Warrington’s 2022 season debrief, head coach Powell discussed his potential leaders for the upcoming year.

Warrington finished 11th place last season, and moved quickly to enhance their squad for 2023 after a disappointing debut year in charge for Powell.

Australia and Italy international Paul Vaughan has joined on a two-year deal. Sam Kasiano also joins Dudson from the south of France, while the club are expected to announce another signing in the near-future, with the number seven shirt left vacant from their recent squad number announcement.

Speaking of his side’s leaders for 2023, Powell told Carney: “I think some of the players that we’ve recruited; I think Josh McGuire in particular, and Gil Dudson.

“They are two pivotal players in the middle of the field who are significant leaders. I think improvements from within as well, people feeding off those guys. There’s a couple of players there who are going to be outstanding for us in a leadership perspective.

“People like Josh Thewlis who have got a whole lot of drive in them and lead by example.

“He’s a really good communicator is Josh as well. I see some of the younger players; Leon Hayes spoke at half-time in the Salford game. There are some people there who have got maturity beyond the years.”

Warrington kick-off the 2023 Super League campaign at home to Leeds Rhinos on Thursday, February 16, live on Sky Sports.
