Championship club Dewsbury have signed former Castleford full-back Calum Turner on a one-year deal.

The 22-year-old joins the Rams after spells with Castleford, Featherstone and Newcastle Thunder.

Turner came through the academy at Castleford and made 15 first team appearances. He spent last season with Newcastle.

On joining Dewsbury, Turner said: “It has been a bizarre 48 hours really! I had one phone call with Lee Greenwood and made the decision to sign for the club.

“It is the perfect opportunity for me with Dewsbury not currently having an out and out full-back.

“I really want to get back to enjoying playing rugby and Lee has got a hard working environment, even though it is a pretty young squad.

“Everybody at the club is trying to improve to the high standard needed to compete in the Championship this year.”

Dewsbury coach delighted to secure services of Calum Turner

Rams coach Lee Greenwood said: “It’s no secret we have been looking for a quality full-back, so when we knew Calum was available we acted quickly.

“He has always performed well whenever I have watched him. The players in our squad that have played with him in the past rate him highly.

“He will have a bit of catching up to do after missing pre-season, but once he is up to speed he will prove to be a great addition.

“Calum will enjoy it at Dewsbury and this will bring the best out of him. He ticks all the boxes of what we are looking for when recruiting.

“He is already proven and experienced, but being in his early twenties he has plenty of time to improve.

” Along with the other guys we have, that can cover the full-back position, we feel we now have good competition for places in every position.”
