Blake Austin in action for Warrington

Blake Austin is set to make his Leeds debut this Friday against Wigan at the DW Stadium.

The Australian half-back missed his side’s opening game of the season against Warrington due to suspension.

The 31-year-old joined the Rhinos on a one-year contract from the Wolves in the off-season. He received a one-match ban following the club’s pre-season win over Hull.

He will make his first competitive appearance against Wigan on Friday night. Austin revealed that he received his debut shirt from assistant coach and Super League legend Sean Long in a special moment for the former NRL star.

“I’m just really excited,” he told Leeds Rhinos. “I got presented my jersey this morning from Sean Long by all people. What a special character to get my jersey presented by.

“They put his accolades on the screen. I’ve really got to know Sean Long as a coach but it was a really nice, pleasant reminder of what a player and man he was.

“A really special moment and I can’t wait to get going.”

He continued: “I’ve spent the last three years with every game I’ve played in this country against Wigan being a big one.

“It’s been a big rivalry I used to have and I’ll be bringing the same sort of energy and passion. I can’t wait.”

Rhinos: Leeds Rhinos coach on Myler injury, Austin debut & outstanding Martin

Wigan v Leeds

Leeds coach Richard Agar has been forced to ring the changes to his 21-man squad.

Richie Myler has been ruled out with a groin injury. Tonga winger David Fusitu’a misses out as he completes his minimum 10-day return to play protocol. He failed a head injury assessment in last week’s loss to the Wolves.

The Rhinos are also without back-rower James Bentley and hooker Brad Dwyer, who begin their four and one-match suspensions respectively.

Leeds goal-kicker Rhyse Martin has been allowed to return home to Australia on compassionate leave following the death of his father last week.

Leeds impressed with just 12-men against Warrington following Bentley’s sending off. Only a late try from Connor Wrench saw Warrington come away with a 22-20 score.

Austin added: “I think the whole group (impressed). With the adversity that we faced, to be pushed right to the wire.

“I said to the boys this morning; I think the first few rounds more important than wins or losses is about what team you want to become and preparing yourself for the journey ahead.

“Personally, I think that was a really good start. A few new guys are coming in this week and we need to match that and continue building a team that’s full of effort and energy. That’s what I’ll be hoping to bring.”
